Sublimation vs DTF

Sublimation dyes polyester fibres so the print becomes the fabric; DTF bonds a film onto almost anything. The garment you're printing usually decides the winner.

Bottom Line

Sublimation is unbeatable on white/light polyester — zero hand-feel, all-over prints, and colour that never cracks because it's dyed into the fibre. But it only works on polyester and can't print white/dark garments. DTF prints any colour on any fabric (cotton included) with a durable, soft transfer. Choose sublimation for poly performance & all-over designs; DTF for everything else.

Quick Answers

Can you sublimate a cotton shirt?+

No. Sublimation only bonds with polyester fibres — on cotton the print washes out almost immediately. For cotton garments you need DTF, DTG or screen printing.

Why can't sublimation print white?+

Sublimation has no white ink; it dyes the existing fabric, so it needs a white or light polyester base for colours to show true. Anywhere you want 'white' simply stays the colour of the garment. DTF, by contrast, lays down an opaque white base and prints vivid colour on dark garments.

Which is better for a polyester sports jersey?+

Sublimation, if the jersey is white/light poly and you want an all-over design with zero hand-feel that never cracks. If the jersey is dark or you only need a chest logo and names/numbers, DTF is faster and more flexible.

Does sublimation last longer than DTF?+

On polyester, yes — sublimation is permanent because the colour is dyed into the fibre, so it can't crack or peel. DTF is very durable (40-60 washes) but is a transfer bonded on top, so over years of heavy washing it will soften before sublimation would.
